Advanced Self-Advocacy Workshop
This three-part certificate program provides in-depth training in healthcare navigation, advocacy strategies, escalation pathways, and self-advocacy communication skills. Participants progress from understanding system structures to applying practical tools for addressing barriers in care and advocating more effectively for themselves and others. A certificate of completion will be awarded.
Session 1:
Healthcare Systems, Insurance, and Medicaid Navigation
Focuses on understanding how healthcare systems function, including provider roles, referrals, care coordination, insurance basics, in-network and out-of-network coverage, and Medicaid navigation. Participants learn how system structures can affect access to care and build foundational skills for navigating healthcare more effectively.
Session 2:
Advocacy, Escalation, and When Care Breaks Down
Teaches participants how to respond when healthcare concerns are not addressed. Topics include recognizing breakdowns in care, understanding escalation pathways, navigating complaint and grievance processes, and using structured advocacy strategies to pursue resolution and support.
Session 3:
Communication, Bias Awareness, and Self-Advocacy
Explore how communication patterns, power dynamics, and subtle bias can affect patient experiences. Participants build skills to recognize communication barriers, strengthen self-advocacy, and practice approaches for responding more effectively in real-time healthcare interactions.
